Concerns about whether Fiji's education system is preparing students for employment were among the issues raised during the Constitution Review Commission consultations held at Garvey Park in Tavua.
Balata College student Tanisha Sharma says the education system is not adequately preparing young people for employment, as what students learn in school does not always match the needs of industries.
Year 13 student Karalaini Raika of Tavua Secondary School also questioned provisions in the Education Act 2025 that allow schools to seek financial contributions from parents for projects.Raika says this appears to contradict the constitutional right to free education from primary to secondary school.
Another issue raised during the consultations was the role of cane farmers in the sugar industry.Tavua Special Administrator Ravindra Raghlu called for cane farmers to be formally recognised as key stakeholders, saying their views should be considered in decisions affecting the industry.
The Constitution Review Commission is encouraging members of the public to make submissions through its online portal or by email before consultations close on 30th June.
