Soso and Lasakau villagers uphold carabulubulu tradition on Bau
Hundreds of villagers from Soso and Lasakau on the chiefly island of Bau have gathered to honour the traditional carabulubulu, a ceremony held to appreciate the hard work done throughout the year in cleaning village graveyards.
Kaiava Camarua says the traditional protocol has been practised for generations and is usually observed on Boxing Day to acknowledge the collective efforts of the villages.
Camarua says the importance of carabulubulu is taught to the youth so the tradition can be passed down from generation to generation.
He adds that it is vital to instil this protocol in young people, as they will one day take over from the elders in leading the celebration.
Camarua also highlighted the role of the Masau family, who are responsible for maintaining communication between the Turaga Bale na Vunivalu and the two villages, including conveying directives and wishes to the communities.
