Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation following his departure from Portugal’s international camp in September.
The 41-year-old captain left the Portugal squad after being an unused substitute in the match against Norway and later learning he would not start against Denmark.
Ronaldo said in a statement that Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had twice “broken his word”, describing the situation as a serious breach of trust.
The Al-Nassr forward was provisionally suspended on 9th October.
The federation’s disciplinary council has confirmed that it had upheld the charge against Ronaldo and imposed a fine of 255 euros (FJ$646.02).
It remains unclear which matches or activities the suspension will affect, or whether the period already served under the provisional suspension will count towards the 30-day ban.
Portugal coach Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo but indicated that the door remained open for his return following Portugal’s 2-1 victory.
Ronaldo has accepted responsibility for his actions and apologised to his team-mates and fans, saying he deserved to be punished.
Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença says there was a strong desire to see Ronaldo return to the national team once the matter was resolved.
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, both men’s international records.
He has also helped the national side win Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League twice.
