RFMF Commander reconnects with old friends after nearly 40 years at Church College Golden Jubilee

For RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, returning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Church College of Fiji was more than just a school reunion, it was a chance to reconnect with friends he had not seen in nearly 40 years and relive some of the best memories of his youth.

Kalouniwai says one of the biggest highlights of his school years was winning the Deans Trophy.

He says he was proud to be part of the school’s Under-18 and Under-19 rugby teams, and seeing his former teammates together again after so many years has brought back many special memories.

The RFMF Commander says former students who have not attended the celebrations have missed a huge opportunity to reconnect with old friends and classmates.

However, he says there are still a few days left in the Golden Jubilee programme and hopes more former scholars will join the celebrations before the programme concludes on Sunday.

Meanwhile, it was an emotional reunion for former students at the Church College of Fiji as they marched through Suva today to celebrate the school’s 50th Golden Jubilee.

Alumni, including many who returned from overseas, joined the march from the Suva Flea Market to the foreshore, with some seeing their former schoolmates for the first time in 20, 30 or even 50 years.

Speaking to fijivillage News, President of the Events Committee, Nemani Delaibatiki says the excitement has been unreal and overwhelming, particularly for former students reconnecting after decades apart.

He says the march was also a way for the school, formerly known as LDS Technical College, to thank Suva and the wider Fiji community for supporting the institution over the past 50 years.

Delaibatiki says many alumni are now based overseas, making their return to Fiji for the anniversary celebrations an emotional experience.

He also thanked the Suva City Council, the Fiji Police Force, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces brass band, families and supporters for helping make the march possible.

As part of the celebrations, members are also giving back to the community through clean-up activities at the Suva foreshore, Suva Point and My Suva Park.

Delaibatiki says groups will collect rubbish and help clean public spaces as part of their commitment to serving the community and showing their faith through action.

The celebrations will continue tonight with a special alumni-themed market event from 6pm to 11pm.

Delaibatiki says the event is open to the general public and will feature 24 vendors offering a range of food, including BBQ, seafood and kokoda.
