It is important for everyone to appreciate Fiji’s history, and also acknowledge that today we are a multicultural and multi-religious country which gives us the freedom for religious celebrations and worship and we are blessed that mutual understanding has broken cultural and religious barriers.
This has been highlighted by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro as we mark the 147th Girmit Commemoration Day.
While expressing gratitude to the invaluable contribution of the Girmitiyas to Fiji since their first arrival in 1879, Radrodro says the theme for this year “From Roots to Wings: Carrying the Girmit Flame Forward” is apt as whatever we plant today, must flourish and bloom in years to come and this will only be possible when the roots are strong and have been nurtured with immense hard work, dedication and perseverance.
He says this can be witnessed in the legacy of the Girmitiyas.
Radrodro says their inheritance serves as a testament to the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of the human soul.
The Minister says as we commemorate their journey and honour their immense sacrifice, we must reaffirm our commitment to preserving their heritage and building a future that celebrates diversity, equality, and solidarity.
He says as we journey together to a better and sustainable Fiji for all, let us teach our children, our youths that race is a privilege and nationality is an honour to be recognized and respected.
Radrodro says once again on this Girmit Commemoration Day, may our prayers strengthen our bonds with the divine and with one another; let the values that we uphold be reflected in our walk of compassion, gratitude, and unity which define our belief.
He adds may the light of Christ be upon us all and be our source of inspiration and peace forever more.
