Public safety will not be compromised, says Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu as the Force prepares to recruit 400 officers despite a reduced budget from $240.3 million to $226.5 million.
Tudravu says they will continue to deliver their services and maintain public safety.
Speaking following the 2026/2027 National Budget announcement, Tudravu says the Force will prioritise its spending and ensure resources are directed towards its most important operational needs.
He says recruitment will continue, with 400 vacant positions set to be filled.
Tudravu says Police have already completed a recruitment drive and has a pool of successful candidates ready to be appointed.
The Commissioner says while the Force is still hoping to receive approval for the additional 588 positions that were previously endorsed by Government, the immediate focus is on filling the 400 existing vacancies.

On concerns about compromised police officers, Tudravu says existing internal procedures are in place to deal with misconduct and stressed that disciplinary matters will not be affected by the budget allocation.
Tudravu also acknowledged concerns over ageing police stations and facilities, saying upgrading infrastructure remains a priority. However, he says Police will first assess available funding before deciding which stations will be renovated, while also exploring support from development partners for some projects.
He adds that the Police Force has also submitted its job evaluation review to Government and is awaiting a decision.
Tudravu reiterated that despite financial constraints, the Force remains committed to protecting the people of Fiji and responding to the country's evolving security challenges.
