The English Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted an error of judgement in awarding Erling Haaland’s winning goal for Manchester City against Manchester United.

Haaland’s 60th-minute goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR intervened and determined he had been played onside by Patrick Dorgu.

However, questions were raised over whether the offside Enzo Fernandez had interfered with play while diving towards the ball.

Pro Ref says although Fernandez did not touch the ball, the VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of his position and should have recommended an on-field review.

United defender Lisandro Martinez described the decision as an injustice, while manager Michael Carrick says he was confused by the call.

City secured the derby victory despite playing with 10 men after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card in the 23rd minute for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes.
