Patel says Diwali atmosphere building despite downturn in sales
With Diwali just a few days away, Suva businesses say the festive atmosphere is slowly building in the city, with shops decorated and businesses preparing for a last-minute rush of shoppers this week, despite a downturn in sales when compared to previous years.

Suva Retailers Association President and owner of the CK's Suva Bargain Centre, Jitesh Patel says the past weekend was a good one for businesses, and they expect this week to be quite busy as people make their last-minute Diwali purchases.

Patel says the festive atmosphere is there, with businesses ready to welcome customers, although sales have slowed slightly as consumers remain cautious about what they are buying.

He says the cost of doing business has gone up significantly, and businesses are trying to manage rising costs while keeping their operations running.

On concerns about some businesses advertising products that are not available in their shops, Patel says businesses cannot always control stock availability, as products can sell out within a day.

He says businesses have the right to advertise, while customers have the right to purchase the products.

He is encouraging consumers to visit the city, shop around and compare prices while also considering the quality of products.

Patel says customers who have issues with products or services should first try to resolve them by speaking directly with business owners or shop managers rather than immediately raising their concerns on social media or to the Consumer Council of Fiji.

He is also urging businesses to remain resilient during these tough economic times, saying customer service is very important and businesses must ensure they comply with all rules and regulations.

Patel is encouraging people to share the joy and spirit of the festival of lights with elderly people, neighbours and those going through difficult times.

He says people should also remember those at the Golden Age Home and St. Christopher's Home, who also need the care and support of families.

Meanwhile, Diwali will be celebrated this Sunday, with the public holiday falling on Monday.
