Passenger in critical condition after Lakeba crash; LTA warns drivers to follow licence conditions

A passenger is in critical condition following a serious accident in Lakeba earlier this week.

The crash happened along the uphill stretch at Tabusue, where a truck carrying 15 passengers veered off and ended up in a ditch.

Preliminary information suggests that the driver was operating a manual transmission truck despite holding a Group 2 automatic licence with condition 7, which restricts the driver to driving automatic vehicles only.

The Land Transport Authority has warned that driving a vehicle outside the class and conditions of one’s licence is extremely dangerous.

Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says driving a vehicle that a person is not trained or authorised to operate puts not only the driver’s life at risk but also the lives of passengers and other road users.

Rokosawa also urged vehicle owners to exercise greater responsibility when lending their vehicles.

He says owners must ensure that anyone allowed to drive their vehicle holds the correct licence class and conditions for that specific vehicle type.

He warned that allowing an unqualified or improperly licensed driver to operate a vehicle can have devastating outcomes and may also expose vehicle owners to legal liability.

The LTA has reminded all licence holders to drive only the vehicles they are trained and authorised to operate to help improve road safety across the country.
