Communities across Fiji could soon be better prepared for disasters as government agencies work on creating a centralised national risk profiling system to improve preparedness, response and recovery.
Speaking during a consultation workshop in Lami, Savannah Dantin says the new methodology is being developed in partnership with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office to better understand the risks faced by communities and bring together critical disaster-related data already being collected across government.
Dantin says significant work is already underway in Fiji’s disaster risk space.

She says the system is expected to help communities better prepare for disasters, strengthen emergency response efforts, and support faster recovery following major events.
Dantin says discussions over the last two days have been productive, with technical experts and government representatives sharing information and highlighting platforms already being used to build a stronger understanding of disaster risks in Fiji.
Around 85 representatives from ministries, technical agencies, utilities and other key stakeholders took part in the consultation, including officials from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, Telecom Fiji, Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Meteorological Service and the Mineral Resources Department.
She adds they are looking forward to finalising the project and making the system accessible not only to the National Disaster Management Office and relevant ministries, but also to the wider public to help strengthen resilience and support better-informed development across Fiji.
