Michael Jackson biopic faces backlash as critics call it 'whitewash'

Film critics have described the new Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, as a 'whitewash', saying it presents a sanitised version of Michael Jackson’s life and career.

The film stars Jaafar Jackson as the King of Pop, following his rise from the Jackson 5 to global solo success.

However, it has drawn criticism for failing to address the sexual abuse allegations against Jackson, with reports that related footage was removed due to a non-disclosure agreement.

The Telegraph says the film avoids the elephant in the room, while The Hollywood Reporter notes it will still appeal to longtime fans of his music.

Although Jaafar Jackson’s performance has been widely praised, the overall film has received mixed to negative reviews.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian describes it as shallow and filled with clichés, while Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent calls it a “soulless cash grab.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film also features Colman Domingo, Nia Long and Miles Teller.

Critics say by ignoring the allegations, the film lacks emotional depth and realism, although many agree that its music performances remain a highlight.
