Messi breaks two World Cup records
Lionel Messi has broken two FIFA World Cup records after inspiring defending champions Argentina to a stunning 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in their Round of 16 clash.

The Argentine superstar now holds the record for the most goals scored by a player at the FIFA World Cup finals with 21 and has also become the first player to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches.

Egypt looked set to pull off a major upset after racing to a 2-0 lead.

Defender Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring, while another Egyptian goal in the 58th minute was ruled out for a foul.

Mostafa Zico then scored shortly afterwards to double Egypt’s advantage.

Argentina finally responded in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero scored from a Messi assist.

Messi, who had earlier missed a penalty, then stepped up in the 83rd minute to level the scores at 2-2 and complete his record-breaking night.

Enzo Fernández sealed the remarkable comeback with Argentina’s third goal to secure a 3-2 victory.

Argentina are now through to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Switzerland or Colombia at 1pm on Sunday.

France face Morocco in the first quarter-final at 8am on Friday, followed by Spain against Belgium at 7am on Saturday. Norway face England at 9am on Sunday.
