A live tsunami siren test is currently underway along the Suva-Lami corridor as the National Disaster Risk Management Office tests the functionality of 13 sirens installed along the Suva foreshore.
The NDRMO says the exercise is part of the Government’s efforts to improve readiness for any tsunami event.
All 13 tsunami sirens are being activated during the test, with each siren having an acoustic range of about 1.2 kilometres.
The sirens are located at the Water Authority of Fiji’s Kinoya Sewerage Plant, FINTEL in Vatuwaqa, RFMF Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa, USP Statham, USP Lower Campus, USP Main Campus, Veiuto Primary School, Government Training Centre in Nasese, iTaukei Trust Fund Board, SCC Civic Car Park rooftop, Biosecurity on Renown Street in Suva Central, Government Shipping Services in Walu Bay and Lami Town.
The NDRMO stresses that no evacuation is required as this is only a test.
