Kadavu aims to become more self-reliant through community-driven development plan
Kadavu is aiming to become more self-reliant within the next two years through a community-driven development plan focused on creating jobs, strengthening local leadership and reducing dependence on Government and donor funding.

Chairman of the Kadavu Provincial Council, Isikeli Vuniwaqa, says the province has begun implementing its Strategic Development Plan from the provincial level down to districts and villages to ensure every community is involved in shaping Kadavu's future.

Vuniwaqa says the plan takes a holistic approach to development by bringing communities together under one vision and strengthening community resilience, enabling the province to drive its own major development projects instead of relying on Government or donor agencies.

He says creating employment opportunities is one of the council's key priorities, particularly for young people, as many continue to leave Kadavu in search of better-paying jobs in urban centres and overseas.

Vuniwaqa says the province is focusing on expanding opportunities in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, tourism and the sustainable use of natural resources to encourage more people to remain on the island or return home.

He also says industrial hemp is being considered as a potential economic opportunity, stressing that hemp is different from marijuana and could provide another source of income for the province.

The Chairman says Kadavu is also exploring renewable energy solutions, including solar power, to reduce its reliance on expensive fuel as global fuel prices continue to affect maritime communities.

Vuniwaqa says the provincial council is also calling for stronger regulation of freight charges and retail prices, saying the high cost of transporting goods to Kadavu has contributed to the rising cost of living for residents.

He adds that communities have also raised concerns about the quality and pace of infrastructure projects, with issues such as collapsed water tanks and slow progress on road development highlighted during consultations.
