Independence must mean dignity, security and opportunity for every Fijian - Prof Prasad
As Fiji celebrates its 56th anniversary of independence, National Federation Party Leader Professor Biman Prasad says independence must mean more than the freedom to govern ourselves; it must also mean the freedom of every Fijian to live with dignity, security and opportunity, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender or economic circumstances.

In his Fiji Day message, Professor Prasad extends his warmest greetings to every Fijian, at home and abroad, saying Fiji embarked upon the extraordinary journey of governing itself 56 years ago.

He says independence was achieved through political struggle, negotiation and compromise by leaders who, despite their differences, recognised the importance of securing a common future for the people.

The NFP Leader says the party remains immensely proud of its contribution to that journey, particularly through the leadership of A.D. Patel and Siddiq Koya, whose commitment to equality, justice and democratic representation helped shape the foundations of the independent nation.

However, he says the work of nation-building remains unfinished.

He says Fiji is once again passing through an important and sometimes difficult period in its political and constitutional history, with genuine differences of opinion about the direction the country should take.

Professor Prasad stresses that these differences must never become a reason for division, intimidation or hostility between communities.

He says Fiji’s history has taught the country the painful consequences of allowing politics to divide people along ethnic and religious lines.

He says Fijians have travelled too far and endured too much to allow the prejudices of the past to determine the future of their children.

On constitutional matters, the NFP Leader says the Constitution belongs to the people of Fiji, and any effort to reshape the country’s constitutional future must respect the law, allow meaningful public participation and proceed without unnecessary haste.

He says no political leader or government should place its ambitions above the democratic rights of citizens.

He is urging people not to be fearful of the discussions taking place, saying democracy gives them the right to question, disagree and demand accountability.

He says these rights must be exercised peacefully, confidently and with respect for one another.

Professor Prasad says national responsibilities extend beyond constitutional questions, with thousands of families continuing to face concerns over the cost of living, employment, education, healthcare and the opportunity to build a better life.

He says young people deserve a country in which their talents are valued, their aspirations are achievable and their future is filled with hope.

He says he remains convinced that Fiji’s greatest strength lies in its people and their capacity to overcome adversity together.

The NFP Leader says Fiji is a nation of many cultures, traditions and faiths, but its people share one country and one future.

On this Fiji Day, he is calling on all Fijians to renew their commitment to a country where democracy is respected, diversity is celebrated and every citizen has an equal place in national life.

On behalf of his family and the National Federation Party, Professor Prasad wishes all Fijians a happy and peaceful Fiji Day.
