Govt settles $2.9M drainage payments to contractors in North

The Government has paid a total of $2.9 million to several companies for outstanding payments from last year for the completion of 919 metres of drainage maintenance and the construction of culvert crossings and associated drainage infrastructure, benefiting 1,050 farmers and 30 communities by improving rural residential drainage and farmland.

While handing over the cheques in Labasa, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture, Waterways, and the Sugar Industry, Dr Andrew Tukana, says these works are essential for improving drainage systems, mitigating flood risks, and ensuring safer, more accessible communities.

He has also acknowledged the patience shown by the contractors and says they are pleased to now settle these outstanding payments.

While also acknowledging the delays experienced by the companies and expressing appreciation for their professionalism and perseverance, Dr Tukana reaffirmed that the Government remains committed to strengthening its partnership with the private sector and improving internal processes to ensure timely payments in the future.

Dr Tukana says this milestone reflects the Government's continued commitment to meeting its financial obligations while recognizing the vital contribution of contractors in delivering critical infrastructure that supports communities and enhances resilience.

He says the cheque handover is not only about clearing outstanding payments, it is about restoring confidence, supporting businesses, and reaffirming our commitment to inclusive development.

Dr Tukana says as a Government, they will not leave anyone behind.

The Ministry confirms the completed projects, including drainage maintenance and the construction of culvert crossings, have significantly improved water flow, reduced flooding impacts, and enhanced connectivity for communities.

They say the Government continues to prioritise investment in infrastructure that promotes economic growth, safeguards communities, and builds resilience against climate-related challenges.

The Ministry says companies receiving payments expressed their appreciation for the Government’s efforts, noting that the settlement will assist in stabilising their operations and enabling them to continue contributing to national development.

They add they they remain focused on enhancing financial management systems and accountability measures to prevent future delays and ensure efficient service delivery.
