From humble beginnings in the village of Navunisole in Tailevu, Swire Shipping Fijian Drua loose forward Elia Canakaivata says he grew up in a home without a television, where watching even a single Super Rugby match was a rare privilege.
As he prepares to run out for his 50th game this Saturday, the experienced loose forward says he feels truly blessed to reach such a milestone with the Drua.
Canakaivata shares that pursuing rugby was his mother’s greatest dream for him.
After the tragic loss of his father and older brother in a vehicle accident, he was determined to carry that dream forward and support his family.
He says both of his brothers played rugby but never reached the highest level, making him the first in his family to compete professionally and represent his country.
Looking back, Canakaivata recalls watching the Super 12 with his father, who encouraged him to train hard so that one day he could play on the big stage.
Now, he says his wife and baby are his pillars of strength, and he is deeply grateful for their support throughout his rugby journey.
Canakaivata continues to support his mother and family back in the village and remains committed to doing his best in his professional career to provide for his loved ones.
The Drua will take on the Highlanders at the 4R Stadium in Ba this Saturday at 4pm.
In matches this week, the Hurricanes will meet the Crusaders at 7.05pm tomorrow, the Waratahs will face the Force at 9.35pm, Moana Pasifika will face the Blues at 7.05pm Saturday, while the Reds play the Brumbies at 9.35pm.
