FIFA has launched an investigation into the altercation involving Argentina players and coaching staff following their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final.

The disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the incident, with any players or coaches found guilty potentially facing suspensions, while the Argentine Football Association could also be fined.

Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala appeared to be involved in the confrontation after the final whistle.

The investigation comes after FIFA opened separate disciplinary proceedings against Argentina for displaying a banner supporting the country's claim to the British-controlled Falkland Islands, which Argentina calls the Islas Malvinas, following their semi-final win over England.

The British government called on FIFA to investigate, as FIFA's disciplinary code prohibits political, ideological, religious or offensive messages at stadiums.

Argentina's players or football federation could face fines of about US$5,000 to US$20,000 if found guilty.

Argentine President Javier Milei defended the players' actions, saying the banner reflected the views of many Argentines, but acknowledged the team could still receive a fine from FIFA.
