The Fiji Council of Social Services has welcomed the Government’s recent decision to increase social welfare support, saying it comes at a crucial time as families continue to struggle with the rising cost of living.
FCOSS Executive Director Vani Catanasiga says she is pleased with the relief provided, as just two weeks ago they had raised concerns about escalating cost pressures due to increases in fuel prices.
In an interview with fijivillage News, she says the approval of a 50 percent top-up in social welfare payments will alleviate some of the stress faced by families.

Catanasiga further says that with $100, people are not getting the same amount of groceries in their basket as before.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced that the Government will provide a temporary 50 percent top-up to all social welfare recipients for three months, from the 1st of May to the 31st of July.
This is designed to give immediate relief to vulnerable households and ensure that no one is left behind during this difficult period.
