A man has killed eight children, including seven of his own, in a mass shooting in the United States.

Police say the incident happened early Sunday morning in Shreveport, Louisiana, and was described as a domestic disturbance.

Authorities say the suspect attacked the children at a home before driving away in a stolen car. Police later chased the man and shot him dead.

Two women, including the children’s mother, are in critical condition after being shot as another child is in hospital after jumping from the roof while trying to escape.

Police have identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins and believe he was the only person involved in the shooting.

The victims, who were siblings and a cousin, were aged between 3 and 11 years.

Investigators are still working to find out the motive, but reports suggest the suspect was going through a separation with his wife.

Police say investigations are continuing.
