The 43-year-old man charged over the alleged attack on Australian MP Helen Haines has appeared in court for the first time, as the politician remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital.
Brendan Nugent appeared briefly in court, where he reportedly remained silent and showed no emotion during the proceedings.
Nugent did not apply for bail and is expected to return to court in February.
He faces charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
Haines suffered severe injuries to her lower body during the alleged attack, with Australian media reporting that one of her legs has been amputated.
Police have not ruled out laying additional charges, including attempted murder, as investigations continue.
Authorities say the motive behind the alleged attack remains unclear, and there had been no previous indication that Nugent was capable of carrying out such an act.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he has spoken with Haines' husband and assured the family of continued support.
Albanese says he contacted Haines' husband on the night she was rushed to hospital and again on Wednesday morning.
Haines remains in a critical condition as police continue their investigations.
