Emergency water assistance has reached families on Cikobia Island who are facing dry weather conditions, despite strong winds and rough seas disrupting water carting operations.

The National Disaster Risk Management Office says the MLC Vatulawa is currently at Cikobia Island, but rough sea conditions have made it unsafe to offload the main water supply.

Despite the challenging conditions, the crew has managed to deliver bottled drinking water, sanitary hampers and a 5,000-litre water tank to schools and villages on the island.

The NDRMO says the assistance will help meet the immediate needs of families and communities while they await the main water delivery.

They say authorities are closely monitoring weather and sea conditions, and water carting operations will resume once it is safe to do so.

The NDRMO adds that the safety of residents and response teams remains its top priority.
