Cruise tourism has returned to Yasawa-i-Rara, bringing new income opportunities for families on the island after hydrographic survey work improved navigation safety for visiting vessels.
The recent visit by the Seabourn Pursuit marked its third call to Yasawa-i-Rara, with around 180 tourists arriving and receiving a warm welcome from the local community.

Visitors enjoyed cultural tours, local handicrafts and traditional cuisine, giving the people of Yasawa-i-Rara the chance to proudly showcase their culture and hospitality.
According to the Republic of Fiji Navy, the return of cruise tourism has been supported by critical hydrographic survey work carried out through Fiji Hydrographic Services to improve navigation safety and update nautical charts for vessels travelling in Fiji waters.

The Navy says this work also supports easier access for ships visiting maritime communities and strengthens confidence in Fiji’s maritime routes and destinations.
They say the successful visit was made possible through collaboration between Fiji Hydrographic Services, Transam Fiji Limited, Market Development Facility and the iTaukei Trust Fund Board, which also helped prepare the community for the visit.
The Navy adds that hydrographic work is not just about charts and surveys, but also plays an important role in maritime safety, tourism, community livelihoods and Fiji’s wider economic development.
