The Fiji Corrections Service says alert personnel on duty successfully intercepted a package containing contraband including 17 rolls of marijuana, two sachets of methamphetamine crystals, and 45 rolls of suki that was thrown into the Suva Corrections Centre in Walu Bay at around 11am today.
The Corrections Service says the incident deliberately targeted lunch routine operations when inmates were moving from their dormitories to the kitchen mess hall.
They say their security systems and CCTV cameras have captured the suspects and their vehicle registration details, and they are working closely with the Fiji Police Force to locate and arrest the culprits.
Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva condemned the incident, saying such actions directly undermine the rehabilitation of inmates.
Moceisuva says this is a prime example of the lack of support from members of the public who continue to fuel this illegal activity.
He says they have identified the culprits through their security systems and CCTV, recorded their vehicle registration numbers, and are now working with Police to bring them to justice.
The seized contraband also included one touch-screen mobile phone, one button mobile phone, one thumb-sized phone, one charging cable, one gas lighter, two packets of chocolate, two packets of chewing gum and two packets of Sunrise Bongo/Bean snacks.
The Fiji Corrections Service says it maintains a zero-tolerance policy on contraband and continues to strengthen its surveillance to block illegal entry points into the prison system.
