Colleagues praise boat captain's courage after six health workers rescued from sea ordeal

Boat captain Risiate Senilagakali, who helped save six health workers after they went missing at sea in Lau for more than 30 hours, has been praised by his colleagues for his courage and dedication, with one describing their relief at seeing him safe after the ordeal.

Senilagakali had earlier tried to swim towards Aiwa Island and was rescued on Thursday morning, while the six Ministry of Health workers were rescued on Thursday night after they spent more than 30 hours drifting at sea when their boat encountered engine problems.

Speaking after visiting Senilagakali, Eastern Health Division General Services staff member Temo Colavanua says they were overjoyed to see him safe.

Colavanua says when they first heard the group had gone missing, they could understand what they were going through because they had experienced similar sea journeys themselves.

He says they were deeply worried, but never lost hope, as their faith kept them strong throughout the ordeal.

Colavanua says they know Senilagakali well and have always admired his commitment and dedication to his work.

He says seeing Senilagakali safe has brought great joy and relief to everyone.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health praised Senilagakali describing him as a hero, claiming he swam through rough seas to alert authorities, helping to save the lives of the six health workers.

They say his courage inspired hope across the country as people prayed for the safe return of the group.

The six health workers are now receiving medical treatment at Twomey Hospital in Tamavua after being flown from Lakeba to Suva on Friday.
