Christian God should be recognized in the Constitution - Sole founder

Christian God should be recognized in the Constitution - Sole founder

The reason God—specifically the Christian God should be recognized in the Constitution is foundational to Fiji’s identity.

This was shared by Semi Tukana the Founder for Sole, while making their submission to the Constitution Review Commission.

Tukana says the argument is not about restricting anyone’s freedom of worship, but about acknowledging the historical roots that shaped the nation.

He says in 1835, Christian missionaries arrived in Fiji and played a significant role in transforming society and their influence helped move the country away from practices like cannibalism and contributed to building a culture that welcomes people of different backgrounds and religions.

Tukana says the presence of the Christian God in the Constitution is seen as a recognition of that foundation not as a tool to impose Christianity on others.

He says this perspective does not seek to deny or limit religious freedom and people of all faiths or none should continue to worship freely.

Tukana says the intention is simply to acknowledge the historical and moral framework that contributed to the nation’s development.

He further says if God is to be included in the Constitution, it should be meaningful and reflected in governance and public life, for example, in how national institutions conduct themselves or uphold moral principles.

Tukana says the argument is that recognizing the Christian God is about honouring Fiji’s historical foundation and guiding values, while still preserving freedom, inclusion, and respect for all religions.

He says they also want the Senate to be reinstated in Parliament as it represents the voices of the people and the land they live on.

The Commission continues receiving submissions and will be going to the public in May.
