Changes coming to local rugby competitions next year – FRU

Rugby fans can expect changes to local competitions next year, as the Fiji Rugby Union looks at making domestic rugby more financially sustainable.

FRU Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu says they have reviewed the finances and structure of competitions like the Vanua Cup and women’s provincial games.

He says the review started at the Vanua level, with the Skipper Cup next to be assessed.

Sewabu adds that FRU has received feedback from provincial unions during its AGM and will consult further before confirming the formats for the Skipper Cup, Marama Cup, and other domestic competitions.

FRU Chair John Sanday says their goal is to deliver quality rugby to the people of Fiji.

He says they are working to balance making the competitions financially successful while still being accessible and competitive.

Sanday adds that unions will be allowed to keep much of their gate takings, helping them earn income and support future growth.
