Budget has positives but spending must be justified - Seruiratu

Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu says while the 2026-2027 National Budget contains some positive measures for people and businesses, the Opposition will closely examine how public money will be spent before giving its full assessment.

Speaking to fijivillage News after the budget announcement, Seruiratu says the budget includes assistance for households and businesses while maintaining consistency in the taxation system.

However, he says government spending remains a key concern.

Seruiratu says the Opposition will scrutinise whether public funds are being spent wisely and whether government spending is focused on the country's most important priorities.

He says growing the economy is important, but the Government must also show how it plans to create growth and what measures will encourage investment and business activity.

Commenting on funding for energy, water and wastewater, Seruiratu says Fiji must continue its transition to renewable energy.

He says the country remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels and should also explore opportunities in biofuel and sustainable aviation fuel using resources such as coconuts and sugar.

Seruiratu says reliable water, electricity and other essential services are critical to attracting investment, but ageing infrastructure also needs to be upgraded.

When asked about the reduced budget allocation for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force, Seruiratu says he will comment further after reviewing the budget in more detail.
