About one in every 700 iTaukei people in Fiji is living with albinism.

This was highlighted by the Ministry of Health's Deputy Secretary for Hospital Services, Dr. Mike Kama, during the national observance of International Albinism Awareness Day.

People with albinism often have very light skin, hair, and eyes, and may experience vision problems and increased sensitivity to sunlight.

Dr. Kama says people living with albinism face lifelong health challenges, particularly from sun exposure, which increases the risk of skin cancer and vision impairment.

He says the Ministry remains committed to supporting people with albinism through strengthened dermatology services and free preventative care.

Dr. Kama says registered individuals are provided with specialised sunscreen, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and umbrellas to help protect them from the harmful effects of the sun.

He also stressed the importance of creating a more inclusive society by addressing stigma and discrimination through collaboration across the health, education and social sectors.

Dr. Kama encouraged all people living with albinism to register with the Ministry to access available support and services.
