Worrying signs as Fiji records three suicides involving students

In the past week, Fiji has had three suicides, and all the cases involve students.

A call is being made to all stakeholders to work together to ensure that a lifeline is always there for people who may be facing challenges in life.

In the latest case, a 14-year-old girl committed suicide in Ba.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro says it was earlier reported that the 14-year-old girl was found by a close relative after calling for help in their bathroom suffering from burns and claimed that two unknown men had burnt her on Sunday.

The girl was rushed to the Ba Mission Hospital and transferred to the Lautoka Hospital after sustaining 90% burns to her body.

The 14-year-old girl passed away yesterday and after investigations, Police have ruled out the allegation and classified the case as suicide.

In another incident, an 11-year-old student died after taking his life as he was unhappy about being disciplined by his mother.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in a village in Kadavu.

In an earlier incident involving another student, a 17-year-old boy had taken his life inside a school dormitory on the island of Ovalau on the 28th of August.

His death has since been classified as a suicide case following the post mortem examination.

Police say to date there has been 63 suicide cases compared to 51 for the same period last year and members of the public are being asked to share their problems and learn to reach out when in need.

There have been 72 attempted suicide cases compared to 68 for the same period last year.

It has been stressed that there are NGOs and religious organisations that specialize in counselling as well as many other services available instead of resorting to such drastic measures to deal with your problems.
