Wet weekend heading our way, however no immediate threat of a tropical cyclone

The Nadi Weather Office says there is no immediate threat of a tropical cyclone for Fiji however a wet weekend is heading our way.

A heavy rain and strong wind warning are in force for Fiji and this is due to a tropical disturbance.

Nadi Weather Office Director, Ravin Kumar says a tropical disturbance was analysed to the far northwest of Fiji, near Vanuatu and is slow moving.

The disturbance is anticipated to possibly intensify into a tropical depression and move towards Fiji.

Kumar says there is no real chance at this stage of the system to develop into a tropical cyclone while it’s over the Fiji waters.

However, he says heavy rain will affect Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Yasawa and northern Lau Group from tonight.

He says as the system comes closer to the group, other parts of the country will start receiving heavy rain which can lead to flooding of major rivers.

He says people in Viti Levu need to take precautions as well as heavy rain is expected from tomorrow into Sunday.

He says this weather system has a potential to produce more than 100 millimetres of rain in the next 24 hours.

Kumar says they cannot say at this stage if weather will clear up by Christmas Day as this will depend on how fast this weather system travels over the group.
