Waqavonovono appears in court

A former employee of the Ministry of Finance, Iliesa Waqavonovono has pleaded guilty to one count of falsification of documents and one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage today.

Waqavonovono has also been charged with two counts of Abuse of Office.

He has pleaded not guilty to the first count of abuse of office but pleaded guilty to the second count.

Magistrate Hettiwattege Somaratne has set a pre-trial conference for the 8th of next month.

A trial date has also been set for the 27th of June.

It is alleged that Waqavonovono between 1st January and 31st August last year, while being employed as a clerical officer retained two BSP cheques in his personal possession which had a total value of $67,998.

These cheques were being refunded to the Ministry of Finance.

It is also alleged that Waqavonovono between 1st March and 31st August last year, dishonestly falsified three cheques totaling $57,409 with the intention of obtaining a gain from the Ministry of Finance.

Waqavonovono also allegedly obtained a financial advantage amounting to the total sum of $57,409 from the Ministry of Finance between 1st March and 31st August last year by falsifying three government BSP cheques.
