Violence against women is a violation of human rights : Sharma
Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Chair, Pravesh Sharma

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission says violence against women remains one of the most severe human rights violations, calling for collective action during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Commission Chair, Pravesh Sharma says as a signatory to key international frameworks like Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, Fiji is committed to upholding the rights of women and girls.

He says there is an urgent need to address systemic barriers such as poverty, inequality and patriarchal norms that perpetuate violence and discrimination.

Sharma adds that combating gender-based violence is both a moral and legal obligation, urging stakeholders, including the government, civil society and the private sector to work together to eliminate violence and promote equality.

Meanwhile, the 16 Days of Activism continues until the 10th of this month, aiming to create a society where women live free from fear, violence and discrimination.
