UN yet to clear the air on Peacekeeping Missions

The United Nations is yet to issue a statement to clear the air on whether Fiji is not allowed to participate in any new peacekeeping missions.

Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had highlighted in his address to the UN General Assembly last month that the Fiji government has not received any official response on the matter.

Fijivillage News approached the UN office and they have said that they will check the situation and get back to us.

The first query was made more than a fortnight ago.

The RFMF's Land Force Commander, Colonel Pita Driti had earlier confirmed that Fiji has more than 200 soldiers in Iraq under the UN mission.

However majority of the Fiji peacekeepers, more than 300 soldiers, are under the MFO mission in Sinai.

The MFO mission is fully sponsored by the US government.

Questions have been raised by Commodore Bainimarama on who made the decision on Fiji to be excluded from new UN peacekeeping missions.

No one has come forward as yet to confirm who made the decision on behalf of the United Nations.
