36 Police officers from the Southern Division Command Group will undergo training from today to develop best practice in responding to violence against women, girls and children in order to improve services and processes when responding to survivors.

The five-day training will be done by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre.

Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali says Police is an important stakeholder and have a critical role in ensuring laws are enforced and survivors are treated with the dignity, respect and the care they deserve.

Ali says the training aims to help officers improve their understanding of violence against women and girls, including gender relations and how this relates to violence against women and girls.

She adds police are making good progress, but some entrenched sexist attitudes are difficult to shift.

Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu will open the training at 9am today at the Tanoa Plaza Hotel.
