Tongan Govt yet to receive extradition application

Fiji’s extradition application for Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara is expected to be received by the Tongan government by Monday.

Ahongalu Fusimalohi, the Special Adviser to the Tongan Prime Minister, said so far the Tongan Foreign Affairs Ministry has only received Ratu Tevita’s bench warrant from the courts.

He said no extradition papers have come through.

Fusimalohi also said the extradition decision will not be made overnight and it may take about a week because the matter has to go to the Tongan courts.

Fiji’s Solicitor General Christopher Pryde said they will courier all the necessary documents and it is expected to go on the Saturday flight to Tonga.

Meanwhile, a few people have been taken in for questioning so far in relation to the escape of Ratu Tevita Mara from Fiji to Tonga.

Police are not revealing any information on investigations after Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama revealed that police will investigate some locals who assisted Ratu Tevita.

Police Commissioner Brigadier General Iowane Naivalurua has only said that investigations are progressing but no further information can be revealed at this stage.
