Tropical Cyclone Winston has not destroyed the spirit of the Fijian people.

This message has been shared by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to representatives of key UN agencies, ambassadors and non-government organisations at the launch of the Fiji Flash Appeal organized by the UN.

The Prime Minister said the devastation caused by Cyclone Winston has made the Fijian people stronger.

Bainimarama said he has been in some communities where almost nothing is left but he still found smiles and laughter.

He added that it has been one of the most inspiring periods of his life to know that Winston could not destroy the spirit of the Fijian people.

Bainimarama stressed that Fijians are strong and will rebuild and recover.

He has also expressed his gratitude to the international community and specifically the governments of Australia, New Zealand, India and France for providing logistic support.

The Prime Minister said the men and women from these countries are making a huge difference to the lives of ordinary Fijians.

He said he will never forget the way these countries offered help to Fiji in its hour of need.

Bainimarama said he is humbled like every Fijian to know that they have so many friends in the world.

The flash appeal launched today will help secure funds for UN agencies and partners to support relief efforts in the country.

All countries around the world are expected to contribute through the appeal as it is officially recognized by the UN General Assembly.
