The Nadi Weather Office says Tropical Cyclone Ula which is currently a category 3 system is expected to gradually weaken in the next 12 to 24 hours.

Director Ravind Kumar says the system is expected slow down on its current track and it is anticipated to track north-westwards.

A northward movement is very unlikely to last long and is not expected to bring the centre directly over the more populated parts of Fiji around Viti Levu.

Meanwhile, a tropical cyclone gale warning which was previously in force for Ono-i-Lau and Vatoa has been cancelled.

A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of the Lau group, Yasawa and Mamanuca group, northern and southern Viti Levu, Lomaiviti group, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands.

Tropical Cyclone Ula was located about 220km southwest of Ono-i-Lau or about 370km south-southwest of Kabara at midday today.

The Cyclone is moving southwest at about 15km per hour.

Close to its centre, the cyclone is expected to have average winds of 150km per hour and momentary gusts to 205km per hour.

On this track, the cyclone is expected to lie about 305km southwest of Ono-i-Lau at 9 tonight.
