The Suva Taxi Association has raised concerns about the accident in Nabua yesterday that involved two taxis that resulted one crashing into the supermarket due to which five people were admitted at the CWM hospital with serious injuries.

Association President, Ratnash Narayan says they have been informed that the two drivers involved were allegedly racing for a spot and they are not surprised as they are aware of the stiff competition particularly in popular retail areas within cities and towns.

Narayan says the competition has often led to aggressive behaviour by the drivers, which noticeably accelerated after the open taxi rank system came into effect on 25th of April 2022.

This year on the 4th September the Association had presented a proposal to the Land Transport Authority for a review of the open rank system that had led to abusive verbal exchanges and violent attacks among drivers.

They have also urged the members to be mindful of their safety and taxi drivers to adhere to the Public Service Vehicle code and ethics.
