After enduring months of pain, fear, and waiting, 58-year-old Harish Chand from Suva finally found relief and a new lease on life at PSH Hospitals in Nadi without having to travel overseas for his life-saving heart surgery.

“I didn’t know what was happening. At first, I thought it was just stress. But then I felt this unbearable pain in my chest. It was something I had never experienced before,’’ Harish recalled.

He was taken to a Hospital in Tavua, where doctors discovered that he had suffered a minor heart attack. From there, he was referred to a hospital in Suva for an angiogram, which revealed multiple heart blockages.

“One of the doctors told me to go to Lautoka for further tests. I was put on a waiting list for nearly four months. The pain got worse, and I couldn’t eat, talk, or even go to the washroom properly. Then the doctor who was supposed to perform the surgery went overseas, I just kept waiting in pain,’’ he said.

That’s when hope came in an unexpected form through a Facebook post.

“My daughter saw a post from PSH Hospitals about their cardiac care services. She told me to give it a try. When we contacted PSH Hospital in Nadi, they responded quickly and told us to come in for consultation,’’ said Harish.

At PSH Hospitals, Harish met Dr Sanjeev Khulbey, a renowned Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, who assessed his condition and confirmed that it was a high-risk case. Despite the risks, Dr Sanjeev assured the family that PSH Hospitals had the expertise and technology to handle it.

The surgery was performed successfully at PSH Hospitals, marking a major milestone in Harish’s life.

“The services here are excellent. I didn’t feel any pain. I didn’t even realize when I was taken to the theatre. When I woke up, I saw my family beside me, I felt like I got my life back,’’ he said with a smile.

His wife, Gyan, shared her relief through tears.

“I was terrified when he went in for the operation. But when the doctors said everything went well, I couldn’t stop thanking God and the PSH Hospitals medical team. They gave my husband a second life’’.

Now, Harish is back on his feet walking, eating, and living pain-free. “Before, I couldn’t even speak properly. Now, I can walk on my own. I feel healthy again. Dr Sanjeev is like my god he saved my life,’’ he said.

“I couldn’t have travelled to India for this surgery. I was too weak and in too much pain. I didn’t know if I’d survive the trip. But thanks to PSH Hospitals, I got world-class treatment right here in Fiji. I’m forever grateful,’’ Harish added emotionally,

Founder and chief executive officer of PSH Hospitals Parvish Kumar says, our mission is to make world-class healthcare available for every Fijian, without the need to travel overseas,” he said.

“Stories like Chand’s inspire us to continue providing quality cardiac care with compassion and excellence. PSH Hospitals will continue to lead as the best healthcare provider in the Pacific,’’ said Kumar proudly.

Dr Sanjeev Khulbey, who led the surgical team at PSH Hospitals, said timely intervention saved Harish’s life.

“It was a high-risk surgery due to his multiple blockages and weakened heart, but with the right technology and teamwork, we succeeded,” he said. “PSH Hospitals advanced cardiac facilities ensure that patients receive the same level of care they would get abroad right here at home.”

Today, Harish Chand’s recovery is more than just a success story, it’s proof of how far healthcare in Fiji has come. Thanks to PSH Hospitals’ world-class cardiac care, skilled doctors, and compassionate team, patients no longer have to endure long waits or costly trips overseas.

PSH Hospitals now also provides emergency cardiac services at its Nadi branch for patients suspecting a cardiac event.
