Interim Sugar Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has defended the Fiji Sugar Marketing Company's decision to purchase around 20,000 tons of sugar from India to meet the local and regional demands.
Chaudhry told Village News that sugar has been imported before due to the below average performance of our sugar industry few years ago.
Chaudhry could not confirm how much it will cost to import sugar from India however he has assured that prices of sugar will not be increased.
He is hopeful the weather will improve next year so that it does not affect the sugar production.
