The Interim Public Utilities Minister is now actively considering the possibility of having stand-by generators and pumps at all water supply systems in the country to minimize the water cuts.
Mahendra Chaudhry said this step should have been taken a long time ago as people cannot just face water cuts every time there is a power cut or the water pumps breaks down.
Meanwhile the Public Works Department said it is looking for expertise to buy the stand-by generators for the Water Supply Department.
Divisional Water Engineer Central/Eastern Sereicokocoko Yanuyanurua confirmed to Fijivillage News yesterday that the Department does not have any generators and he said plans are in the pipeline to buy generators this year.
However, he said they will have to get experts for this and they are currently looking for one.
His comment comes after power failure caused water disruptions in the Central and Eastern Division last Saturday for the whole day.
It has been confirmed that the water supply systems shutdown when we have power cuts due to no standby generators connected to the systems.
