Speeding the biggest killer on our roads - Mishra

Speeding has been the biggest killer on our roads this year.

Latest statistics released by the Fiji Police Force Traffic Unit confirm that 28,768 drivers were fined for speeding this year.

Fiji Police Force Director Traffic, Mahesh Mishra says 2,142 of these drivers were also booked for careless driving.

He adds that at least half of the sixty-one deaths on our roads this year were related to speeding.

Mishra says 43,375 drivers have been booked for traffic infringements and most of them are not first-time traffic offenders.

Police have also booked 11,170 drivers for other offences such as illegal parking.

Five hundred and thirty-four drivers were booked for drinking and driving while 46 were booked for driving without a licence.

There were also 983 drivers booked for not following seat belt regulations while sixty-eight were fined for carrying out illegal operations.
