Police have confirmed that a 59-year-old diplomat from the South African Embassy was involved in the fatal accident at Edinburgh drive on Friday.

Police Commissioner, Ben Groenewald says the South African diplomat is entitled to diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention of 1961.

This means that he will be given a safe passage and will not be susceptible to lawsuit or prosecution under Fiji's laws.

The diplomat can still however be expelled.

Groenewald says the diplomat was being kept at the Totogo police station yesterday after an alcohol test was done.

He says he was not arrested and locked in Police cells.

The Police Commissioner stresses that the investigation will continue and his immunity from the jurisdiction will be dealt with in terms of the Articles of the Vienna Convention.

26-year-old Ashneel Singh was on his way to Suva to catch a late night movie with his best friend Janice Jotika when they had a head on collision with an on‑coming vehicle at Edinburgh drive.

He was rushed to the CWM hospital however he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The accident occurred at around at about 10.15pm Friday.
