South Africa beats Fiji to win USA 7s
South Africa have overcome Fiji 24-14 to win the USA Sevens in Las Vegas and take their first Cup title on the World Series since April 2009.

The South Africans won a superb opening victory on day two against joint Series leaders England in the Cup semi finals at the Sam Boyd Stadium and then proved too strong for Fiji in a pulsating final.

With Cecil Afrika back from injury and at his inspirational best, the Springbok seven were 19-0 to the good inside five minutes after tries by Afrika, Chris Dry and Branco du Preez.

Watisoni Votu hit back for Fiji before the break and Mitieli Nacagilevu’s try made it 19-14 in the second half, but Bernardo Botha’s score made the victory safe for Paul Treu’s men.

As a result of their win in Las Vegas, South Africa claim 24 points towards the HSBC Sevens World Series.

They remain in fifth place but close the gap on leaders England and New Zealand as well as Samoa and Fiji.
