Ryan volunteers for 3 months due to financial situation of FRU

The Fiji Rugby Union has today clarified that national rugby 7s coach Ben Ryan volunteered for three months after being appointed due to the financial situation of the FRU.

In a statement this afternoon, FRU Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Berlin Kafoa said it was a mutual agreement between Ryan and the FRU.

Dr Kafoa added FRU and Fiji are indeed grateful to Ryan who made two personal sacrifices when he accepted his appointment.

Firstly, the package offered is less than what he would have earned in England and secondly he volunteered at a time when FRU was facing financial difficulties.

Dr Kafoa also said that Ryan’s impact and passion about 7s rugby has shown positive results in Dubai and FRU is indebted to Ryan for taking on the task and taking the team to greater heights on a voluntary basis.

The FRU has applied to the Fiji Sports Commission for a grant based on the 2014 Budget allocation which will be used for Ryan’s salary.

It also confirmed that Ryan has officially signed his FRU contract which will be until 2016

Ben Ryan said that it is a very exciting time coming up for Fijian rugby and he is very grateful to be part of this unique journey and he is loving being in the country and working with the team and just wants to give his all for Fiji rugby.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed today that the Fiji Sports Commission may assist FRU with $300,000 for Ben Ryan’s salary and other issues for this year.
 
Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey said the package includes his accommodation and insurance.

Mazey will meet with FRU officials this Friday in relation to the issue.

Last year the FRU applied for funding under the “Engagement of Overseas Coaches Program” where government allocated $2 million for this year.

The program will enable local sporting bodies to recruit international coaches to help develop Fijian athletes and improve Fiji’s international and regional rankings.
