Qarase won’t be caretaker-Interim PM

Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has reiterated that he will not allow for parliament to sit before the next general elections, and will definitely not appoint Laisenia Qarase as the Caretaker Prime Minister.

Bainimarama said he has already thrown Qarase's proposal in the rubbish bin and his idea is now a non issue.

Qarase's proposal is for the interim government to remain in power and just a few weeks before the elections, the interim administration to hand back power to a caretaker government which will recall parliament.

The Ousted PM has also suggested that parliament should sit for at least two weeks to look at urgent business and when asked on what he expects the parliamentarians to discuss, Qarase's reply to Village News is that he would like all the parliamentarians to give their views on the events of December 5th and what has transpired since then. Qarase said the Caretaker PM will then advise the president to dissolve parliament and call the general elections.

However, Bainimarama questions why Qarase did not think of this same idea when he was supposed to hand back power to Mahendra Chaudhry when he was ousted in the May 2000 coup.

Qarase is expected to comment later today after the rejection of his proposal by Bainimarama.
