Manasa Qaranivalu, a Fijian national living in Myanmar, described the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the Southeast Asian nation last Friday as traumatising.

At the time of the earthquake, Qaranivalu was at work in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city.

He says he was on panic mode and thought his office building, located on the fifth floor of a nine-story structure, was on the verge of collapsing.

Qaranivalu says he remembers attempting to take cover under a table, before struggling to open the door, all while hearing the terrified screams from nearby offices.

He says he managed to open the door and ran outside.

The Fijian says his family back home in Fiji was worried after seeing the news online, and he is grateful he was able to speak to his mother.

Meanwhile, about 2,000 people have died.
