President receives Fiji’s Draft Constitution
The President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau said it is critical that we all appreciate and participate in Fiji's constitutional process with dignity, selflessness and patriotism to ensure we have a truly democratic and just Fiji.

Ratu Epeli made the comments while receiving Fiji's Draft Constitution from the Constitution Commission earlier today at Government house.

The President has thanked the commission members for their hard work and all Fijians for their contribution during the submission period.

Ratu Epeli has stressed that the new constitution should cater for everyone and be enduring.

Constitution Commission Chairman Professor Yash Ghai said the commission is grateful to every Fijian and the many organizations for their invaluable submission.

He said with the guidance and wisdom they have been able to make a number of decisions reflected in the draft which responds to the hopes of all Fijians.

The next process will be the appointment of the Constituent Assembly by the Prime Minister which will deliberate on the draft Document.

The work of the Constituent Assembly is expected to be completed by late March next year.

The new constitution for Fiji shall come into effect on the day following the date of assent by the President, subject to any provision in the constitution that postpones the coming into effect of any aspect of the new constitution.
