A community in Lautoka is still in mourning following a tragic incident that claimed the life of a 4-year-old girl last Friday afternoon.

Police say the incident happened around 4pm at a high school in Lautoka, where a sliding gate reportedly fell on the child.

She was critically injured and later died.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine how the gate fell and whether there were lapses in safety or supervision.

This heartbreaking event has sparked concern among parents and community members, raising urgent questions about safety standards at educational institutions.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the four-year-old child and says that the Ministry takes this incident very seriously.

He says ensuring the safety of every child in school is their top priority, and this tragic accident highlights the need for constant vigilance and care within school environments.

Radrodro also called on all schools across Fiji to take proactive measures to protect students.

He says schools should carry out regular safety checks and make sure that emergency procedures are clearly understood and practiced by both staff and students.

He adds that teachers, school leaders, and parents share the responsibility to maintain a safe learning environment and prevent accidents before they happen.
